Lyrics

CALL ME MAYBE LYRICS (up to 1 minute)

I threw a wish in the well
Don't ask me I'll never tell
I looked at you as it fell
And now you're in my way
I trade my soul for a wish
Pennies and dimes for a kiss
I wasn't looking for this
But now you're in my way
Your stare was holding
Ripped jeans
Skin was showing
Hot night
Wind was blowing
Where you think you're going baby?
Hey I just met you
And this is crazy
But here's my number
So call me maybe
It's hard to look right at you baby
But here's my number
So call me maybe
Hey I just met you
And this is crazy
But here's my number
So call me maybe
And all the other boys
Try to chase me
But here's my number
So call me maybe

Prelim Production Diary

GROUP: Phoebe Hall, Katie Dunning, Holly Connell, Jamie Hewlett

26/06/17 - First meeting in our Prelim groups. We had to decide what music video we wanted to create. We narrowed it down to:

Call Me Maybe

Love Me Like You

Last Friday Night

Marvin Gaye

We liked these music videos because they all had a fun, upbeat sound and feeling to them. We liked the pop songs because the videos looked fun to film and they included different camera angles and settings.
We created a media group chat, where we further discussed what videos we wanted to recreate.

27/06/17 - Today we decided on the music video Call Me Maybe. In this lesson we watched the video frame by frame up until 1 minute and screenshot all the different angles and created a storyboard. We then created a list of props and costumes we needed and shooting schedule.

28/06/17 - Today we went to Phoebe's house and managed to film the first 30 seconds of the music video. We used Phoebe's conservatory and garden as the setting for the video. The filming was successful and we got some good shots and were able to get a lot of filming done. Obviously we don't have the exact same settings and props but we were able to recreate the shots well. If we were to do it again we would probably try and do it on a day with better weather.

29/06/17 - In today's lesson, we uploaded the footage shot yesterday onto the computer and begun to edit it on premier. To edit we needed to zoom the pictures out and colour correct it to make the video lighter and have a warm glow like the video. We found out that some of the shots we filmed didn't look like the shots we wanted and some files went corrupt so we need to refilm some shots. We also worked on the blog posts that we needed for the video.

30/06/17 - In today's lesson, we continued the editing and blog posts. So far we are pleased with what we have created so far, even though we have to retake some shots and finish filming the rest of the video.

03/07/17 -  Today in lesson we carried on with editing and the blog posts. We also loaded the car with the drum kit. After school, we went to Holly's house and filmed the garage scene. For this scene we needed some extra people to help us film as we would all be a part of the band. We needed a drum player, 2 guitar players, a keyboard player and a singer. We had to clear out the garage and set the drums and band up. The filming went really well and we got all the shots we needed. We finished our filming today.

04/07/17 - Today we downloaded all of our footage and carried on with the editing and the updating of the blog posts.

Vernallis' Music Theory

Mainly focuses on Editing in music videos.
4 Key concepts:

NARRATIVE
*Video is a visual response to the narrative.
*Narrative may not always be completed and it may be partial or disjointed.
*May have a theme/narrative - can be displayed in a montage

EDITING
*Video may disrupt continuity editing
*Editing may also be bought to the foreground

CAMERA MOVEMENT/FRAMING
*Important establishing shots
*Camera moves in time with the lyrics
*Close up of the star(s) of video

DIEGESIS
*Setting of the video
*Can be revealed slowly
*Repetition is key

Goodwin's music video theory

1 - Relationship between the lyrics and visuals which illustrate, amplify or contradict the lyrics.
Example:Bruno Mars - That's what I like

2-Thought beats: seeing the sounds (the relationship between lyrics and visuals - illustrate, amplify, contradict).
Visuals in a video may be edited in time to the music/pace of the song
Example: Lil Uzi Vert -Do what I want

3- Genre - related style and iconography.
Example: Stormzy - Shut Up

4- Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist:the creation of a star image to promote a recognisable brand image.

5- Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females.
Voyeuristic angles
How the artists are looked at (sexualized) - stereotypically
Example: Little Mix - Touch
Jason Derulo - Swalla

6-Intertextual refrences to other media texts may be present, especially in humorous videos.
Example: ed Sheeran - Lego House

Music Videos - Performance, Narrative and Concept examples

Sign Of The Times by Harry Styles is an example of a Performance video. The video evolves around the singer. The video has various shots of Harry walking or flying through fields and English countryside. This is a stereotypical performance music video as it focuses on the singer who is lip syncing the song to the camera. It includes various camera angles, ranging from close ups to wide long shots.
Uses one of Goodwin's concepts of creating the star in the music video.

Love Me Again by John Newman is an example of a Narrative video. The video shows the story fo 2 young people going to a dance, where John Newman is singing the song, and the 2 people begin to dance and 'fall in love' with each other. At the end of the music video you see the 2 people get hit by a car. This video highlights the key features of the story of the two people. It includes various cuts and scenes which add to the story and the atmosphere of the video.

Do I Wanna Know by Arctic Monkeys is an example of a Concept video. The video  has a black background and drawings appear on the screen, The video consists of lines and their movements mimic the sound of the guitar and the beat of the song. Further on in the video drawings of cars and of women in different scenarios are in the video. Nearing the end of the video colour is used. The background changes and the colour highlights the transitions of cuts in the video which adds to the upbeat/ slightly intense atmosphere of the video.
This is a prime example of a concept video because it does not include the identity of the band in the video.
